Am Donnerstag mache ich mich auf den Weg nach Düsseldorf. Nach der Ankunft geht's erst mal zu COS (dass es in Düsseldorf ein COS-Geschäft gibt, hat mit der Wahl des Prüfungsorts absolut nichts zu tun gehabt; ehrlich!). Am Abend werden die Käufe per Skype vorgeführt.
Aila went to Düsseldorf to take the theoretical and practical tests for her boating license. The fact that there’s a Cos in D’dorf had nothing absolutely nothing to do with her choosing this venue for the tests. The Cos knit she held up during a Skype call that evening was utterly irrelevant.
Der eigentliche Zweck der Reise ist aber nicht Shopping, sondern der Erwerb des Sportbootführerscheins Binnen. Im Bild der Medienhafen mit dem Ausbildungsboot Julian I im Vordergrund; im Hintergrund das Übungsgelände. Die Julian I gehört Marine Coach Julian Olfers, unter dessen kompetenter Anleitung ich mich in den kommenden Tagen auf die Prüfung vorbereiten werde.

Beim Spaziergang an der Rheinpromenade kann man das Wissen für die Theorieprüfung auch gleich in der Praxis üben. Ein roter Kegel mit Spitze nach unten bezeichnet das rechte Rheinufer - der Rhein fliesst hier nach unten!
A walk on the Rhine Promenade presented a good example of the test material: this red downward-pointing triangle indicates the right bank of the Rhine when heading downstream, just like in the books!
Eine blaue Tafel an der Steuerbordseite des Führerhauses bedeutet: dieses Schiff begegnet anderen Schiffen an Steuerbord, oder auf deutsch: das Schiff fährt auf der falschen Seite!!
And here’s another textbook illustration made real: this barge is traveling towards us and has set its blue board on the starboard (right) side, communicating that it’s sailing on the “wrong“ (left) side of the channel, and that oncoming ships should pass it on its right, rather than the "normal" portside-to-portside passage.
Das ist gewöhnungsbedürftig, oder? Der Bergfahrer, nämlich das gegen den Strom fahrende Schiff, wählt die Seite des Fahrwassers, auf der die Strömung geringer ist.
The ship heading upstream determines which side it will take, and may chose the left lane because the flow is weaker, for example.
In Düsseldorf gibt es aber auch andere coole Dinge. Zum Beispiel diesen 'offenen Bücherschrank' an der Uferpromenade. Dort kann jeder ein Buch entnehmen und im Austausch andere Bücher hineinstellen. Wie man sieht, nutzen die Leute diese Möglichkeit zum Lesen und sich austauschen.
Further along the Promenade Aila spotted this public convenience, a nice little bookcase where you can pick up or drop off a book or two with total informality. No registration necessary. And it seems to be a hit.
Hier ist der Marine Coach in Aktion. Um es vorwegzunehmen: dank seinem 'VIP-Service' schaffe ich die Prüfung fast spielend.

Schliesslich steigt der Experte auf unser Boot, und los gehts: Anlegen, Ablegen, nach Seezeichen fahren, Mann-über-Bord-Manöver absolvieren, Schallzeichen erkennen und sieben Seemannsknoten vorführen. Anschliessend findet dann noch die schriftliche Prüfung statt.
Then the expert appeared onboard and Aila had to perform, using Julian’s boat: docking and undocking, man overboard, steering towards a landmark — plus she had to tie seven knots and correctly identify some sound signals. Then she took, and aced, the theoretical test next. Mission accomplished. Good going, Aila!
Der Führerschein wird erst in einigen Tagen eintreffen. Statt dessen hier noch einmal eines der COS-Schnäppchen.
Her small craft license will arrive soon; in the meantime she can enjoy her Cos treasures, like this funny (zippered? and in the back?) tee shirt.
